I can think of no more fitting a “first-post” for a police psychologist’s web-site, than to announce: On Saturday, December 04, 2010 the Board of Trustees of the American Board of Professional Psychology met in Chapel Hill, NC to vote on whether or not to approve an application for affiliation of Police & Public Safety Psychology as an ABPP specialty board.  For those of you not in the field of psychology, this is the Body that determines what specialties are unique enough in the scope of their training, research and practice to warrant a Board Certification.

A little before 9:00 a.m. the board voted.  Dr. Nadine Kaslow, President of the Board, announced to her board (and to Dr. David Corey listening in by phone), “On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the American Board of Professional Psychology, it is my distinct pleasure to inform you that the application for affiliation of Police & Public Safety Psychology as a specialty board of the ABPP has been unanimously approved.”

For months, Dr. Corey, and the rest of the Board of Delegates of the Council of Organizations in Police Psychology have worked on this application.  The counsel was made up by members from three primary professional organizations, Division 18 of the American Psychological Association; the Society of Police and Criminal Psychology; and the International Association of Chiefs of Police Subsection on Police Psychology.  This effort was in no small portion due to people like Michael Cuttler and Jon Moss as well as Gary Aumiller, JoAnne Brewster, Lorraine Greene, Steve Griffin, Herb Gupton, Susan Saxe-Clifford, and Phil Trompetter.

To those who will benefit from this profession directly (e.g., officers who receive services from police psychologists, or professionals who earn their livelihoods as police psychologist), you should know that this event IS monumental.  The bar has yet again been raised, insuring a level of credentialing that raises the value of the professional and the profession.   I want to offer my sincere thanks to all who invested time and effort on our behalf.
